Direct displacement-based design is a seismic design approach that is a replacement for traditional force-based design methods. Direct displacement-based method for seismic design is based on the performance and the expected deformation of an element rather than its strength. The seismic demands in this method are displacements, which are considered proper quantities to describe the performance of an element under a seismic event, particularly when the element is resisting the induced forces in the inelastic range of response. This webinar will discuss the direct displacement-based seismic design (DDBD) of concrete structures, and its role in performance-based seismic design. The webinar will start with a motivation as to why force-based design methods are less suitable for earthquake engineering. This will be followed by a discussion of the fundamentals of DDBD as applied to simple systems, such as a bridge pier wall, and its extension to more complex structures such as multi-story concrete moment frames and wall buildings as well as multi-span bridges. The webinar will conclude with a discussion on a path forward to implement direct-displacement-based design methods as a preferable method, including possible inclusion into various design standards.
